‘I was impressed at just how easy it was      to make a claim on the WellWoman Plan’      Lynne Harper

I took out a WellWoman plan on the spur of the moment because at £8 a month I felt it represented very good value.

I never dreamed for a moment that I would ever have to use it but, just over a year later, doctors carrying out routine tests for irritable bowel syndrome discovered that I was in fact suffering from cervical cancer .

Less than two weeks later I underwent a radical hysterectomy operation at St James’s Hospital in Leeds to try to control the cancer.

Fortunately, it worked and I did not need further radiation or chemotherapy treatment but it was still four months before I could return to work.

I was impressed at just how easy it was to make a claim on the WellWoman plan.

I simply filled out a claim form and gave permission for WellWoman staff to contact my GP and consultant and received the cash sum within two weeks of the medical reports being received. You hear horror stories, particularly about health insurance companies refusing to pay out. When you are ill you don’t want to have to chase up medical reports. This wasn’t the case with WellWoman. It was so quick and easy.

My WellWoman policy gave me the peace of mind to concentrate on recovering from cancer and allowed me not to have to worry about going back to work before I was fully fit.

And in February 2008, I was able to continue my recovery by taking a two-week holiday in Madeira, paid for with the money I received from the WellWoman plan.

‘I was impressed with the sympathy and      efficiency of the staff who handled my      claim’ Jill Lovelock

Both my mother and aunt had suffered from breast cancer so I knew I was at risk of contracting the disease. So, in 1997 when I read about the WellWoman policy I signed up.

Because I was at risk, I volunteered for the IBIS research programme for tamoxifen and thereby uncovered that I suffered from DCIS a form of pre-cancer, which was not covered by the policy.

But five years later just as the screening programme was about to come to an end, a breast scan revealed a malignant tumour and I underwent emergency surgery to remove the lump. I was also given a course of radio- therapy.

I was very lucky, my cancer was discovered early. The tumour was small but was deep in my breast and would have been very difficult to find using self-checking.

My cancer was diagnosed in June 2007 and by September 2007 I’d received my payout. I was impressed with the sympathy and efficiency of the staff who handled my claim.

I had three weeks off work and then took three weeks holiday to recover.

To mark my retirement from work and return to health, my husband and I took a month-long holiday of a lifetime to China where we watched the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and many of the events others could only see on TV.

It was a fantastic way to celebrate a milestone and the fact that I had overcome my breast cancer.

N.B The WellWoman Plan is not an income replacement policy, the benefit is payable as a cash sum, which you can use as you wish.
