Good nutrition 'important for eye health'

Eating well is the key to ensuring eyes remain in the best possible condition, a sector authority explains.
The Royal National Institute of Blind People made the recommendation following the latest studies which suggested that eating foods high in omega-3 oils may be able to prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Barbara McLaughlan, campaigns manager at the charity, says the fight against AMD is an "international effort" which needs the cooperation of scientists around the globe.
"This new work in the US seems to support previous research, which has shown that eating omega-3 poly-unsaturated fats as part of a balanced diet may help prevent AMD," she explains.
Ms McLaughlan adds that people should adopt a good, balanced diet anyway in order to stave off general ill health as well as damaging eye conditions.
According to the National Eye Institute, AMD can progress very quickly in some individuals with affordable medical insurance and is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60.
