Golfer to play while wife has breast cancer treatment

Phil Mickelson's wife Amy has breast cancer

On of the world's top golfers has revealed he is to compete in an upcoming tournament while his wife undergoes treatment for breast cancer.

Phil Mickelson, who is ranked as the second best player on the planet, recently announced he was to stop playing the sport indefinitely to support his spouse Amy through her therapy.

However, the 38-year-old has the blessing of his wife to take part in the US Open major, which is being held from June 18th to 21st in New York.

On his personal website, Mickelson said his participation in the event coincided with his wife's treatment, which may be of interest to breast cancer insurance customers.

"We have a wonderful team of doctors helping us and it is believed that we caught this early. We are anxiously waiting for a number of test results that will help guide us in the best possible direction," he commented.

In 2006, fellow golfer Darren Clarke's wife Heather passed away at the age of 39 after a long battle with secondary breast cancer.
