Lifestyle changes 'can help tackle breast cancer'

Hospital

As women get older the likelihood of their developing breast cancer increases, it has been stressed.

Dr Emma Pennery, clinical director at charity Breast Cancer Care, commented that women can do little about the main risks associated with the condition - their gender and age.

However, she went on to say that there are some measures that women can take in order to reduce the likelihood that they will contract the disease.

"You can take lifestyle steps to try and lower your risk by keeping your weight within healthy limits, taking regular exercise, keeping alcohol within moderate limits and not taking too much high saturated fat in your diet," she commented.

Dr Pennery went on to say that screening remains the most effective tool that health professionals have to try and detect breast cancer as early as possible, although she emphasised that treatment of the condition is difficult.

She stated that treatment can involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy although it is a challenge to determine which of these methods will be right for each person.
