Tories promise child dental checks

David Cameron has promised to give free dental checks to all children under five if the Tories win the next election.

Under the Conservative Party leader's proposed plans, children would receive the check-up at school, along with being shown how to brush their teeth properly and warned about the dangers of fizzy drinks and sweets.

It is estimated that 680,000 youngsters would benefit from the £17 million scheme, which may interest family health insurance customers.

According to Andrew Lansley, the shadow health secretary, almost two-thirds of schools do not currently offer a dental check-up process.

"We believe that it is vital to highlight any dental problems early in a child's life, and to reinforce the importance of good preventative care and advice," he explains.

In related news, Northern Ireland health minister Nigel McGimpsey recently announced that the country is to receive £17 million of funding to recruit nearly 40 new dentists to areas in need of oral healthcareADNFCR-2041-ID-19175341-ADNFCR
